A journey of a thousand miles begins with a fabulous pair of shoes.
Renowned podiatrist in New York, Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, who has been a crusader for comfort footwear, has few tips on this up her sleeve.
Forget Flip Flops
Flip flops are the least protective kids’ footwear one can think of, says Dr. Sutera. They don’t afford the kind of foot protection parents would usually expect for their children’s young, delicate and growing feet. These footwears may be a good idea while taking a shower but they are not what podiatrists would generally recommend for outdoor wear, adds Dr. Sutera. Flip flops become detached from feet easily and toes remain susceptible to injuries.
Measure Feet Size
Do a regular measurement of children’s feet size. Children’s feet grow very fast and it is common for their feet to outgrow their shoes unnoticed. Even if the shoes seem to fit, look for signs of worn-out or poor shape to make sure they are suitable for kids.
Always Use Socks
Never allow kids to wear shoes without socks. Sock serve as a comfortable barrier between the skin and the shoes, and allow absorption of perspiration. Otherwise, moisture on feet can lead to growth of bacteria and send out odor.
Rotate Footwear
Just like clothes, shoes need regular change to give some breathing space, said Sutera. This extends the lifespan of shoes besides providing protection to feet. Keep multiple pairs of shoes for this purpose.
Stick to Comfort
No matter which brand of kids’ shoes your little ones wear, if they are not comfortable, they are not comfortable. Discomfort in footwear can lead to many feet problems. Shoes should be neither too small nor too big for kids.
Bottom Line
Sensible choice as well as correct usage of kids’ footwear is a must for healthy feet. Keep in mind the above tips from expert the next time you buy kids’ footwear online or at your local neighborhood store. Always give your children the best to wear.
